Stage bus, formally known as a public bus, refers to a motor vehicle operating on urban roads along fixed routes and designated stops for passenger transit. As a key segment of commercial vehicles, city buses serve as the backbone of the urban public transport network.
A city bus generally refers to an "urban bus equipped with passenger standing areas", distinct from intercity coaches and tour coaches, as its design focuses primarily on frequent stops and short-distance commuting. Key characteristics include: a boxy body profile fitted with windows and seats; low floor clearance with 2 to 3 passenger doors; wide aisles and grab rails designed for standing passengers; and a maximum design speed typically capped below 70 km/h, with urban operating speeds ranging between 25 and 50 km/h.
Classified by structural configuration, city buses mainly comprise the following types:
Single-deck bus: The most common type, categorised by length into medium-sized (7–10 metres) and large-sized (10–12 metres) variants.
Articulated bus: Formed by two sections linked via an articulation joint with a full walk-through gangway, colloquially known as a "bendy bus", generally measuring up to 18 metres long to deliver higher passenger capacity.
Double-decker bus: Divided into upper and lower decks, with seating on the upper deck alongside seating and standing space on the lower deck; it delivers higher passenger capacity than single-deckers, albeit with a higher centre of gravity and comparatively lower driving stability.
Categorised by operational model, this also includes Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)—a modern transit system running on dedicated busways to offer higher transport capacity and operating speeds.
The bus sector is rapidly accelerating its transition toward electrification and smart vehicle technology. In 2025, driven by national fleet renewal and trade-in initiatives, domestic city bus sales reached 30,000 units, marking a year-on-year growth of 34.3%. Fully electric buses have now become the market mainstream, with leading manufacturers introducing next-generation models equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), low-entry steps, and wide aisles for enhanced accessibility.
Taking the Zhongtong N Series fully electric city bus as an example, the 9-metre model accommodates between 84 and 101 passengers, features CATL LFP battery packs, and offers optional Level 2 ADAS along with a 360-degree camera system, embodying the "green, smart, and accessible" direction of modern urban public transport.
